STRUCTURAL TIMBER CONNECTORS / I-JOIST HOLE SUPPORTS

Simpson Strong-Tie IHS300 I-Joist Hole Support (For 300mm–302mm Joists)

The Simpson Strong-Tie IHS300 is an innovative web-reinforcement solution engineered to structurally strengthen 300mm to 302mm deep I-joists when web holes must be cut in locations normally restricted by standard building guidelines. Manufactured from 1.5mm pre-galvanised mild steel, the IHS system allows large rectangular services holes—up to 200mm high by 250mm wide—to be positioned as close as 50mm from the bearing face. Supplied as two sets of interlocking plates (one complete set per side of the joist), it can be retrofitted even around existing pipework, eliminating expensive and labor-intensive timber trimming for Soil Vent Pipe (SVP) runs and HVAC ducting.

RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION FASTENERS

To maintain full shear capacity and satisfy UK building control standards, the IHS300 must be fixed into the top and bottom chords using 3.75x30mm square twist nails. Fastener count depends on the bracket opening width: 24 nails for a 150mm opening or 32 nails for a 250mm opening (per hole support set). Ensure a minimum overlap of 45mm between the interlocking plate halves.

KEY STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES

  • Close-to-Bearing Hole Placement: Enables service holes to be cut as close as 50mm to external support walls, simplifying Soil Vent Pipe (SVP) and duct runs without compromising shear strength.
  • Interlocking Retrofit Design: Supplied as 2 pairs of sliding, interlocking plates that easily fit over installed joists or around pre-existing services.
  • Variable Opening Adjustment: Easily adjusts horizontally to accommodate hole widths ranging from 150mm up to 250mm.
  • Saves Time & Trimming Costs: Eliminates complex joist-trimming timber details when rerouting large soil or ventilation pipes through floor zones.
